Practical tips for innovation management and business ideation
Reinforce that the Business Model Canvas is a tool that will allow learners to validate their social
innovation business model. With this tool they will work on a business proposition for their social
1 innovation business idea observing what differentiates them from possible competitors, in what
ways it complements more traditional approaches to the societal challenge(s) or need(s) they
are trying to solve, what opportunities they have, how much impact they will be able to achieve,
and what degree of innovation this new social idea brings to the market.
Present other tools that can help learners understand what they must do to bring a new social
2 innovation idea to life. Explain to them that most of these tools are online, some for free download
and others need to be purchased. Facilitators are advised to read and explore the suggested
resources before presenting them to the learners.
3 Use the ‘Innovation Flowchart’, a tool proposed by NESTA with the aim to support innovation
design and the development and growth of an idea.
4 Replicate this activity by using the ‘Innovation Flowchart’ to explain how learners can track their
social innovation business idea and turn it into a real business proposal.
Remember to introduce and clearly explain, during the session, all the business lingo that might
5 not be of the knowledge of the learners. Some of these terms can be value proposition, market
values, added value, customer segments, revenue streams, etc.
