The aim of this activity is to provide the learners with the methods and tools so they can explore opportunities
and challenges to develop ideas for social innovation in the social economy business.
In this activity the learners will have to complete a Business Model Canvas, a one-page overview
of the strategy of a new business or business idea. To do that, trainers and/or facilitators must
cover the following steps:
Step 1
Introduce the Business Model Canvas to the participants by relating them with the essentials of
strategy and management in business planning. Leave room to focus on the negative and
positive externalities and SDGs sections of the Canvas, as representing a templated more
adapted to the needs of a social innovation business. Facilitators must use the tools listed in the
Implementation Step 2
resources section.
Assign each group with the task of researching for the current social innovation trends. These are
the top challenges and needs of the social economy to watch for! After that, each group must
select a specific challenge or need that will be their social innovation business idea to work on.
Step 3
Provide participants with Tool 1 – Business Model Canvas and ask them to fill it by answering the
questions provided in the template. These questions are to be answered having in mind the
challenge or need they have previously selected.
Step 4
Take turns with each group so they can present their business idea and the results of their first
exercise.
Step 5
The facilitator will debrief the session by highlighting the participants’ contributions to explain
how to fill in a Business Model Canvas and to recap its importance into bringing ideas that intend
to address a specific societal challenge or need into a business proposition.
